Description

Hermann Park Conservancy's FREE garden class series in the McGovern Centennial Gardens continues with a session on fermentation!

Come learn the ancient art of fermentation from Andrew Cobb!

Fermenting foods is a way to preserve food, harvest probiotics, spread food cultures, and get creative with tasty unique flavors. In this introductory class, we will cover the basics of the fermentation process, taste homemade ferments, and you will make and take home a mason jar of your first vegetable ferment! Your gut is already thanking you. The class is based on the teachings of Sandor Katz’ book Wild Fermentation, an essential reference for budding home fermenters.

This class will use locally grown produce as available, meaning that the vegetables we ferment in class will change by the season! We have fermented cabbage, beets, carrots, daikon radish, green beans, turnips, mustard greens, and more. These nutritious goods have been flavored with dill, fennel, oranges, garlic, and ginger. Come see what’s in season and make your own combination!

This class is free and open to the public. Advanced registration is required.

Andrew Cobb is a Houston native who worked in IT out of school, but later awakened to the joys of being outside and growing food with others. He is currently cultivating a food forest on a house lot in Third Ward, teaching fermentation classes at Finca Tres Robles, and installing home gardens.

The Family Garden is an edible, interactive garden, designed to showcase vegetables, herbs, fruit, citrus, and berries that can be grown successfully in the Houston area. The entire Houston community is invited to participate in cultivating these beds, and to experience the touch, the scents, the colors, and the taste of fresh vegetables and herbs. You may see beds in various stages of production, from newly-planted all the way to harvest-ready. To learn more about the Family Garden, click here.

Join Hermann Park Conservancy the last Wednesday of each month as local experts share tips and tricks focusing on gardening topics and techniques. For a full calendar of Conservancy events, click here.
