Event description

Description

This special workshop introduces the decorative prayer known as retablos folk paintings of Catholic subjects that reflect the traditional religious belief of 17th-19th century Mexican culture. Retablos are found throughout Catholic churches in New Mexico, where artist Elizabeth Skelton was first introduced to this colorful and lively form of prayer art. The Spanish word retablo means "behind the altar” and behind the altar is where many spectacular retablos provide the backdrop in church sanctuaries.

We will start with a short history of retablos, and then spend the rest of the time painting our own retablos.

All are welcome! No experience is necessary. Just bring your curiosity and creativity.

Participants are welcome, but not required, to join us for the liturgy of the hours at 5pm at the church, and have your retablos blessed by a priest after the 5:30pm mass.

$40.00 workshop cost includes materials such as the pre-gessoed wood panel and pigments.
