About this Event

Join Ta-Nehisi Coates and Nic Stone as they discuss the powerful young adult edition of Coates’ The Beautiful Struggle. A candid coming-of-age memoir, this adaptation explores one boy’s journey to manhood and his relationship with his larger-than-life father. Coates grew up in the tumultuous 1980s in Baltimore, known then as the murder capital of the United States, with seven siblings, four mother figures, and one highly unconventional father: Paul Coates, a Vietnam vet, Black Panther, and Afrocentric scholar. Ta-Nehisi’s gripping story lays bare the struggles of inner-city kids, detailing the challenges on the streets and within families.

Ta-Nehisi Coates is the author of The Water Dancer, The Beautiful Struggle, We Were Eight Years in Power, and Between the World and Me, which won the National Book Award in 2015. He is the recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship. Ta-Nehisi lives in New York City with his wife and son.

Nic Stone is the critically acclaimed, bestselling author of the young adult novels Dear Martin, Odd One Out, Jackpot, and Dear Justyce, and the middle-grade novel Clean Getaway. Born and raised in the Atlanta suburbs, she worked in teen mentoring before becoming a full-time author.
