What is Powerful Tools for Caregivers all about?

It can be stressful caring for a loved one with a chronic condition such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, or ALS.

Powerful Tools for Caregivers® is an educational program designed to help family caregivers. This program will help you take care of yourself while caring for an older relative or friend.

You will benefit from this class whether you are helping a parent, spouse, friend, someone who lives at home, in a nursing home, or across the country.

This is a six-session evidenced based series that meets for 1.5 to 2 hours each week. Classes will meet on Thursdays from March 15 through April 19, 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Missoula County Extension and Weed District Office (directions below.)

 

What are the class dates and times?

Thursday, March 15, 1:00-3:00 p.m.
Thursday, March 22, 1:00-3:00 p.m.
Thursday, March 29, 1:00-3:00 p.m.
Thursday, April 5, 1:00-3:00 p.m.
Thursday, April 12, 1:00-3:00 p.m.
Thursday, April 19, 1:00-3:00 p.m.

 

Where is the class series held?

Missoula County Extension and Weed District Office (MSU Extension Office) is located at 2825 Santa Fe Court across the street from River Ridge Apartments and off Great Northern Loop behind the Albertsons on Reserve St. Click here to map driving or busing directions.

What does the class series cover?

This class series will give YOU, the family caregiver, tools to: 

  • Help you reduce stress
  • Communicate effectively with other family members, your doctor and paid help
  • Take care of yourself
  • Reduce guilt, anger and depression
  • Help you relax
  • Make tough decisions
  • Set goals and problem-solve

Please note that this class will NOT focus on specific diseases or hands-on caregiving for the care receiver. No professional caregivers, please.

 

Includes How-To-Do-It Book!

Each class participant will receive a book to accompany the class content. This book contains chapters covering topics such as:

  • Hiring in-home help
  • Helping memory-impaired elders
  • Making legal and financial decisions
  • Making decisions about care facility placement
  • Understanding depression
  • Making decisions about driving

FAQs:

Is there an age limit to enter the class? No. Missoula Aging Services promotes the independence, dignity and health of older adults and those that care for them. The content of this class is relevant to all ages of caregivers.

 

Are there any special instructions to help me find the event location or access parking? Missoula County Extension and Weed District Office is located at 2825 Santa Fe Court, Missoula 59808. There is free parking around the building,  Click here to map directions to the event location. 


Are there special instructions upon arrival at the workshop? Please check in at the front desk reception area of the Missoula County Extension and Weed District Office. The workshop sessions will take place in the main meeting room.

 

Who facilitates the Workshop? This class series will be faciliated by Missoula Aging Services Resource Specialist Jenna Twitchell and Missoula County Extension FCS Extension Agent Kelly Moore.  

 

What if I cannot afford the cost or need help registering on the Eventbrite site? Call the MAS Resource Center Helpline at 406-728-7682 during our normal business hours Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. or email help@missoulaagingservices.org. No one will be turned away based on a hardship to pay.

 

Is there an age limit to enter the event? No, but the information discussed will be most relevant to people who are caregivers.

 

What are my transport/parking options getting to the event? Missoula County Extension and Weed District Office is accessible on Mountain Line city bus. Parking is available in the lot outside the building.

 

Do I need to bring a registration "ticket" to the workshop for entry? You do not need to print off your ticket but if you do, we gladly accept it as it speeds up the check-in process.
