Event description

Description

POWERFUL TOOLS FOR CAREGIVERS (6 PART CLASS)

It can be stressful caring for a loved one with a chronic condition such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, or ALS. Powerful Tools for Caregivers® is an evidenced based curriculum designed to help family & community caregivers. Please note that this class WILL NOT focus on specific diseases or hands-on caregiving for the care receiver. The program WILL help participants learn to take better care of themselves and manage their stress while caring for a relative or friend. Caregivers will benefit from this class whether they are helping a parent, spouse, friend, someone who lives at home, in a nursing home, or across the country. No professional caregivers, please.

In the six weekly classes, participants develop a wealth of self-care tools to: reduce personal stress; change negative self-talk; communicate their needs to family members and healthcare or service providers; communicate more effectively in challenging situations; recognize the messages in their emotions, deal with difficult feelings; and make tough caregiving decisions. Class participants also receive a copy of The Caregiver Helpbook, developed specifically for the class. This book contains chapters covering topics such as hiring in-home help, helping memory-impaired elders, making legal and financial decisions, making decisions about care facility placement, understanding depression and making decisions about driving.
