About this Event

Powerful Prenatal Relationships

This session is designed to increase participant’s confidence initiating professional prenatal relationships with clients that create value, empowerment and positive change in their own and their client’s lives. Based on research with birth doulas, the information has been found to be relevant to any professional working with pregnant families. We will cover topics for prenatal visits, relationships with partners, and an exercise in reflection and cultivating wisdom. Different kinds of prenatal relationships will be covered, from the one hour visit in a volunteer program to a multi year relationship in a community program. We will spend time turning the seven principles of Powerful Prenatal Relationships into personal actions (from the last chapter in Dr. Gilliland’s book, The Heart of The Doula). Flexibility is built into the outline to meet the specific needs of the participants who are present that day. Cole Ramsey brings her expertise as a postpartum doula agency owner.

  • Apply the seven principles of powerful prenatal relationships to create value, empowerment and positive change in their own and their client’s lives.
  • Create an effective schema of topics to use at prenatal visits for a variety of client types.
  • Determine best approaches to involving partners in their own prenatal relationship with the doula.
  • Characterize and reinforce that their primary role of support of their clients is the most valuable and helpful; rather than being a problem solver, fixer or educator.
  • Utilize the nine questions from the Debriefing The Visit Exercise to develop insight into themselves and their clients.

Level Up Your Doula Business!

How often do you wish you had a map showing you where to grow in your birth business? This session brings together your joyful, creative playful mind and your analytical, organizational, goal oriented mind.  We will start with the concept of Ikigai or Joyful Purpose and the DTD Marketing Exercise, and then use mind mapping techniques to tap into the creative part of your brain.  Dr. Gilliland will share her original research on the Five Stages of Doula Development and the Five Phases of Doula Communities, helping you to isolate your own key tasks and challenges. We will spend time visioning your end goal/result, and then mapping steps to get from here to there.  Along the way you will have individual and group feedback about your plans, reflecting back your own talents and affirming the good ideas you already have. You will walk away with a concrete vision, a map, tools, and an organized path of next steps to take in your business.

  • Explain the concept of Ikigai or Joyful Purpose and assess whether their birth business is their Ikigai.
  • Analyze their own doula experiences and discern where they are on the Gilliland Doula Novice to Expert Scale.
  • Distinguish their own individual business challenges based on the Gilliland Doula Community Development Stages (I through V).
  • Assess the market in their own community and their own unique target market.
  • Illustrate what their successful birth business looks like. Outline a detailed action plan (aka, a map) directing them from their current situation to their desired future.
  • Create three unique S.M.A.R.T. goals for their business.
  • Express what problems their business solves for their target market.

Facilitators

Amy L. Gilliland, Ph.D., AdvCD/BDT(DONA), CSE (AASECT) is a research associate at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, one of the first DONA International birth doula trainers, an adult sexuality educator, and an infant mental health expert with specialized training in attachment. Her work has been published in multiple peer reviewed journals and in her new book, The Heart of the Doula: Essentials for Practice and Life. [in person facilitator]

Cole Ramsey (via Zoom Call) has operated her postpartum doula agency in Columbus, Ohio for over three years.  For over sixteen years, she has been supporting families during pregnancy, birth, and through the first year as a childbirth educator, birth doula, lactation counselor, and postpartum doula. Her passion is in teaching doulas and health care professionals the art of support, which she did for many years as a trainer for DONA International and ProDoula. She has also spoken at national conferences on fetal positioning in labor and doulas as facilitators of oxytocin. Cole is currently an independent doula and doula trainer. She spends much of her time mentoring and providing continuing education to over 2,000 doulas in The Tough Love Doula Group on Facebook.

Cancellation Policy: If you cancel due to illness, your payment can be applied to a future session of this training. If you cancel because your client is in labor, you can defer your payment to a later training OR if you wish a refund, send us a time stamped photo of you clearly standing in the labor room post birth (no clients or baby needed). Our current plan is to offer these sessions again in Madison on Tuesday, March 30th and in Milwaukee in mid-June. If you cannot reschedule, you will receive half of your tuition back.

Location: Our location will likely change from the Courtyard Inn - we will inform you of the new location.

Reservation Tickets are just that - $5.00 reserves your spot in the session while you wait and see if your client goes into labor, whether you can get the childcare you want, etc! This enables us to plan ahead and you to know your seat will be available! We refund the $5.00 in cash when you take the training. You will need to buy your regular registration at some point. This just enables us both to plan better! We won't cancel if we know there are a number of reservations, and we can email you directly to find out how your plans are developing.
