An urban design workshop at the MLK Jr. Shoreline. Come build public access improvements in East Oakland!

About this event

East Oakland Collective supports residents of East Oakland, prioritizing Black residents, to navigate challenges and barriers to inequities through resource distribution and advocacy. We work towards racial and economic justice and equitable access. Our work includes homeless services and solutions, economic empowerment and community action. The Martin Luther King Jr. Regional Shoreline is a 748-acre regional park surrounding the San Leandro Bay near the Coliseum industrial area of deep East Oakland. Through our Power the People: Martin Luther King Jr. Shoreline Access Study we are learning how residents want to move around the shoreline and identifying new clean transportation options for the area. We also hope to develop new culturally rich installations and programs in the shoreline park, informed by public engagement.

Join us for a public design workshop to demonstrate priority improvements in the area. Collaborate with neighbors using low cost materials to install temporary improvements. Our goal is to demonstrate effective changes during the workshop that lead to permanent improvements in the area. All materials will be provided by the East Oakland Collective.

Installations might include:

  • Improved signs
  • Landscaping
  • Litter abatement
  • Pedestrian crossings
  • Traffic calming
  • Public Art
  • Bicycle lanes and parking

Food and beverages will be provided for free. This is an all ages event.
