Event Details

In this idea-filled, information-packed seminar, Gary Hoover and guest speaker John Arlotta will give you the powerful vision needed to understand retailing and to succeed at it.

Who this course is for:

  • Current retailers: managers, employees, entrepreneurs, store owners.  From 3000-store chains to independent stores to online and mail order retailers.
  • Individuals and companies which are considering going into retailing.
  • Real estate developers and leasing agents who lease space to retailers.
  • Those who sell products to retailers and want to know how they think.
  • Providers of software or other services to retailers.
  • Architects who design stores.
  • Marketing and advertising agencies and media who serve retailers.
  • Investors in retail companies.
  • Those who have any interest in retail or retail development, consumers and shoppers.  Or just want to better understand how great businesses are built.

Retailing is one of the toughest, most competitive businesses.  Time-honored and formerly powerful names like Sears and Circuit City fall by the wayside while upstarts like Whole Foods Market and the Container Store create new empires.  Independent stores have high birth rates – and death rates.  Service industries from universities to spas to insurance agencies need to understand how to think like retailers, serving diverse customers in diverse places.  In this intense, exciting seminar, you will see retailing through fresh, better informed eyes.

Seminar leader Gary Hoover has been called a retail visionary and an outstanding, internationally known author, speaker, and teacher.

  • Before founding Hoover’s business information service, he created and led the BOOKSTOP bookstore chain, the nation’s first superstore chain and predecessor to the Barnes & Noble superstore operation.
  • Gary fell in love with retailing when he was a teenager, and has spent the last 40+ years learning and practicing the art and science of retailing.  He has learned from personal conversations with everyone from Trader Joe to Chairs of Corporate Boards, and toured retail stores in over 40 nations.
  • Member of Whole Foods Market Board of Directors for 5 years.
  • Retail stock analyst on Wall Street.
  • Buyer for Federated Department Stores.
  • Financial planner, real estate executive, and chief of acquisitions and strategic planning for May Department Stores.
  • Visit to learn more about Gary and his thinking or go to to see excerpts from prior talks and classes. .

Key topics covered will include:

  • Where did the basic ideas of retailing come from?  In this tour of the historical development of American retailing, we begin to understand where the industry is headed by first knowing where it came from.
  • What are the major trends at work in consumer spending and store types?  Is Wal-mart taking over the world or not?  What types of merchandise are booming and what types are not?  Where is the action today and likely to be in the future?
  • What are the first principles, priorities, and purposes of retailing?  What separates winners from losers in this industry?  Gary will use a great many examples and illustrations to show how to “Think like a Merchant,” from site selection and trade areas to signage, from the power of the mix to staffing to hours of operation.
  • Who are the largest retailers today, which ones have momentum and which ones not?  What does the future hold?

The program will close with a presentation by marketing expert John Arlotta (  John has developed and led every type of selling to consumers and businesses – bricks and mortar, event stores, mail order catalogs, and e-commerce.  He's held key positions at Orvis the upscale outdoor and fishing retailer and Harry & David, the world’s largest online and mail order food company.  John will take us beyond the four walls, giving key strategic and selected tactical approaches to the role and importance of a website, email campaigns, search engine optimization, and even how mail order still plays a huge role in the best marketing plans.

Lastly, we will have an informal open-ended discussion and time for you to network.

You will go home with a complete package of presentation printouts and trend data.
