This CE satisfies the MD requirement for Psychologists for cultural competence.

 INTERMEDIATE LEVEL: Attendees should be clinicians with basic knowledge about cultural competence and power within the therapeutic relationship. Target audience: clinicians and mental health professionals.

Power and privilege are important aspects of the therapeutic relationship. Culture influences how power and privilege manifests within the relationship. For this presentation, Dr. Samantha Sweeney will present on the numerous ways in which culture can shape the therapeutic relationship. Participants in the workshop will learn how to identify and label the different types of power differentials. Furthermore, participants will explore methods for maximizing these insights in order to improve the therapeutic relationship and achieve better treatment outcomes for clients.

Learning Objectives

  1. Attendees will be able to explain the intersection of culture with power and privilege in a therapeutic relationship.
  2. Attendees will be able to discuss aspects of themselves that they bring to each therapeutic relationship that influence how power and privilege manifest within those relationships.
  3. Attendees will be to select options for how to approach therapeutic dyads in which the power structures within each individual are similar or dissimilar.

Presenter

Dr. Samantha Sweeney is a psychologist and founder of Family Psychological Services of Capitol Hill, with offices in Capitol Hill and Brookland. She provides therapy, psychological assessment, and psychoeducational services to children, families, and adults. Dr. Sweeney earned her Ph.D. from the University of Maryland - College Park in School Psychology. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania. Prior to opening her own practice, Dr. Sweeney was a preschool teacher, a consultant and researcher in DC Public Schools, and a School Psychologist in Fairfax County Public Schools in Virginia. Dr. Sweeney has been an adjunct professor at Howard University's School Psychology Program and a Preschool Screening Team Leader for the Kathy Wilson Foundation in Alexandria, Virginia. Dr. Sweeney developed Culturally Competent Kids, a website dedicated to helping parents help their children develop cultural competence, in 2015. Dr. Sweeney also conducts speaking engagements for parents, schools, and other professionals in this area.

If Alvord, Baker & Associates, LLC decides to cancel the class, all registrants will receive a full refund. Through Friday, March 26, 2021 registrants of the workshop who need to cancel for any reason will receive a refund of 90% of their registration fee.
