Here and now focus harnesses the power of the therapeutic relationship and is centrally important in ISTDP therapy.

About this event

In Intensive Short-term Dynamic Psychotherapy, a great deal of emphasis is placed on the here and now therapeutic relationship and related emotions, anxiety and defenses that the relationship activates. The therapeutic relationship thus has many functions in assessing and treating a broad spectrum of patients including:

• Evaluating anxiety and defense pathways

• Helping patients to see the destructive effects of defenses

• Helping the patients see their responses to openness and closeness to another person

• Activating feelings about past attachment relationships

• Building of anxiety tolerance

• Sharing the reflective capacity of the therapist

• Encouraging to the patient to do hard therapy work

• Desensitizing to the experience of strong feelings including rage, guilt and grief

• Serving as a template activating past loss at termination.

In this 3 day immersion course Dr Allan Abbass and colleagues will focus on these processes as relates to treatment courses with video of actual patients treated within this treatment framework.

Aspects of this model can be applied to any therapeutic relationship to help understand both challenges and opportunities in any therapy model or therapeutic setting.

This course will allow us to have time for case review and discussion of material to enhance the knowledge and skills of therapists within this framework and those interested in learning about this treatment.

This course will also include a presentations by local Swedish trainers. All videos shown will be subtitled in English.
