3:00pm – 4:00pm – Sex, Drugs, and Money – What Gets Lawyers in Trouble with Joshua Walthall
In a given year, the North Carolina State Bar opens thousands of grievance investigations into the lawyers in this state. While the breadth and depth of the issues the Bar investigates is impressively substantial, the issues that most commonly get lawyers in the deepest trouble are also those that grab headlines: sex, drugs, and money. In this hour, a former State Bar prosecutor will examine recent public Bar prosecutions in these areas and discuss how they might be avoided. Viewer discretion is advised.
Presenter:
Joshua Walthall focuses his practice on representing lawyers before the State Bar and other licensed professionals before administrative licensing boards. Prior to going into private practice, Joshua worked at the North Carolina State Bar for nearly a decade, primarily prosecuting attorney misconduct.
4:00pm – 5:00pm – Mindfulness in the Legal Profession with Scott MacGregor
Growing scientific literature on mindfulness interventions shows great promise for a host of mental and physical health benefits. Mindfulness is the ability to be in the present moment fully, intentionally, and non-judgmentally. In the legal profession, it can help lawyers with the ability to focus and concentrate, let go of distractions, manage stress and other emotions that may be disruptive, and allows you to learn from experiences. Instead of backing away from unwanted and unpleasant feelings and events,, you learn to approach them with calmness and curiosity. In this hour, participants will explore the concept of mindfulness, discuss the current research, and share ideas for practicing and applying this simple but powerful process.
Presenter:
Scott MacGregor is a licensed clinical therapist and stress reduction educator with over twenty years of meditation practice including retreats for mindfulness, meditation in medicine and research, insight meditation, and spiritual reflection. His MBSR certification is through Brown University and he has participated in professional training under the direction of Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn at UMASS Medical School's Center for Mindfulness. He is also trained in the Mindful Schools curriculum. He has taught mindfulness in a variety of professional settings.
