This class will cover the basics of hand-building with clay: slab, pinch and coil techniques, in order to familiarize the students with both the stability and fragility of the clay. Students will then begin to learn how to turn pots on the potter’s wheel, in a fashion to encourage consistency. They will also learn to trim their pottery, glaze, and several decoration methods. Through demonstrations and hours of hands-on experience, students will leave with a general knowledge of the ceramic process.
Assignments will include but are not limited to: One hand built object, using any method discussed in class, a set of two cups, and a set of two bowls. This is subject to the interests of the entire class. Students are encouraged to complete more items in order to see their progression from the start of the class, and will be taking them home at the courses end. Items may need to be fired after the course has been completed and can be picked up when they are finished. Instructor: Tara Betterton
Skill Level: All (Ages 16 +)
