Description

Faculty Forum: Academic Freedom & Free Speech

Recent events on our campus and at campuses across the nation have raised questions about the rights and responsibilities of faculty members in regard to academic freedom and First Amendment rights to free speech, and how to engage campus communities in challenging conversations.

How are academic freedom and the right to speech different and where do they intersect? How can we best manage discussions with students on sensitive and controversial issues, both inside and outside of the classroom? What are the rights and responsibilities of faculty members--and what strategies might they use--in such discussions and in public communication?

Join the Office of Faculty Affairs and Legal Affairs for a workshop intended to explore these topics and offer guidance on how best to support student learning and engagement in challenging times and to promote faculty awareness of legal, pedagogical, and professional issues raised by this topic.

Speakers:

  • Diane Krejsa, Deputy General Counsel
  • John Bertot, Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs

Lunch will be provided.

This event is open only to faculty and staff at the University of Maryland. If you require special accommodations, please email us or call 301.405.6803.
