Event description

Description

Miami is a city of great economic disparity. Almost 75% of Latino Miamians are liquid asset poor, meaning they do not have the saving to subsist for even three months at the poverty level in the event of a job loss or other income disruption. There is also strong racial inequality in educational achievement, household income and asset ownership for Latinos, African Americans and Haitian Americans in Miami. Families lack the means to save or build a basic safety net for financial emergencies, let alone build the wealth needed to lay the foundation for upward mobility.

The Racial Wealth Divide Initiative at CFED understands that redressing this disparity in outcomes requires an inclusive approach that addresses not only these disparities themselves, but their root causes.

On Tuesday, August 8th, join Miami Building High Impact Nonprofits of Color leaders for a roundtable to discuss ways to address the racial wealth divide through advocacy and policy.

**Invited Speakers**

  • Russell Benford, Deputy Mayor, Miami Dade County
  • Xavier L. Surez, Chair, Miami-Dade Economic Prosperity Committee
  • Sheri Colas-Gervais, Vice President, Economic Development and Urban Initativies, Beacon Council
  • City of Miami Communtiy & Economic Development Department

The Miami Building High Impact Nonprofits of Color project, is led by CFED’s Racial Wealth Divide Initiative and sponsored by JPMorgan Chase. This project, over the last year, has worked with nonprofits of color on strengthening their capacity and highlighting the issues of racial wealth inequality and asset development.

In Miami, the initiative is working with:ConnectFamilias, Hispanic Unity of Florida, Miami Children’s Initiative, Partners for Self-Employment, and Sant La.

A light lunch will be served at 11:30 AM EST and event activities will commence at 12:00 PM. The event is free but space is limited. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. RSVP here.
