Portsmouth UCU Postgraduate information and discussion meeting
Thu, March 30, 2017, 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM
Portsmouth University and College Union (UCU) branch would like to invite you to an information and discussion meeting on what our union can do for you as a postgraduate. The meeting will take place on Thursday 30 March from 4-6pm in the Graduate School, Room 4.09.
UCU is the largest and most effective voice for people working and studying in post-school education. We believe that the collective strength of a trade union is the best way of defending and improving our rights and working conditions. We influence institutional and national higher education policy and conditions of employment through research, negotiations, campaigning and discussions with the government and other bodies. We campaign for good governance, oppose privatisation in education, and want to see a properly funded higher education sector. Your local branch has real authority to take your concerns to your employer and negotiate on your behalf. UCU campaigns for improved job security for hourly-paid, part-time and fixed-term staff.
Postgraduates are distinctly under-represented throughout higher education despite being disproportionately affected by casualisation and discrimination. Postgraduate staff make an important contribution to the research, teaching, and administration of universities. UCU is committed to ensuring that your work is appropriately recognised, compensated and supported.
We are actively campaigning together to improve your working conditions. We believe that you have a right to:
- a written statement of the terms and conditions of your employment
- equal pay for work of equal value with non-postgraduate staff
- pay for all the work you do including preparation, marking, and attending required meetings and lectures
- appropriate and adequate training.
Any postgraduate student employed in academic or academic-related work is eligible to join UCU as a full member, whether working on an occasional basis for a few hours or regularly employed throughout the year. Postgraduates who aren’t employed can take up free student membership.
If you are interested in coming to the information meeting to learn more about UCU, discuss any issues you are facing as a postgraduate or get involved in campaigning, then please RSVP to this event.
If you would like to receive updates of UCU activities and branch meetings at the University of Portsmouth then please sign up to our mailing list [insert hyperlink] and join our Postgraduate member Facebook group. Finally, if you would like to join UCU you can do so online at www.ucu.org.uk/join or by calling 0333 207 0719.
We look forward to meeting you on the 30th of March!
