Port Malabar Rifle and Pistol Club Orientation
Saturday, December 24, 2016 from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM (EST)
Welcome to the Port Malabar Rifle and Pistol Club in Palm Bay Florida. With 122 acres and a dozen ranges, we are the largest self-policed shooting club in the state. Orientation for prospective members is held on the fourth Saturday of every month at the club. There are three parts to orientation: An hour-long classroom session, a tour of the range, and a short demonstration of proper gunhandling and shooting by all applicants. You’ll need a picture ID – driver’s license, military ID, CCW, or the like. We also require all members to be members of the NRA, because the club is a 100% NRA-affiliated facility.
Safety is the primary concern at PMRPC. For the gunhandling review, you will be asked to bring either a rifle, pistol or shotgun (no full-auto or simulated full-auto) with which you are familiar. Bring it UNLOADED in a case or holster that encloses the trigger guard and leave it locked in your car. Make sure to bring some ammo, too. If you do not currently own a gun, we will provide one for you at no cost. You will be asked to walk through a short demonstration of proper range protocol, and the safe loading, firing and unloading of your gun.
If a range safety officer has concerns about your gun handling, you will be scheduled for a short refresher course on proper protocols. You may be able to do that immediately after the other candidates have completed their gun handling reviews. This is not about marksmanship, but ensuring that safe gunhandling is being practiced by all members. If you have attended a basic firearms class at PMRPC, or possess a recent classification card for IDPA, USPSA, ATA or NRA competition, we will waive the gun-handling demonstration. PMRPC reserves the right to accept or reject credentials for this purpose. Given the variable standards for licensing, a CCW will not be acceptable.
Orientation starts at 9 a.m. It can take from three to four hours. Each orientation class is limited to 50 slots, so make your reservation early. If you make a reservation and cannot attend, please notify the club secretary at firstname.lastname@example.org. If you make two reservations without attending, you will be barred from joining. There is a $200 initiation fee to join the club, and $150 yearly dues. The dues are prorated by the month, with renewals coming in June. Associate memberships are available for spouses and children for $35 (no initiation fee). Children must reside in your home and be under 27 to be eligible to become an associate member.
