About this event

We are very happy to host Alan Salazar (Chumash, Tataviam) for our November Poppy Hour!

Alan is a traditional storyteller, Native educator, monitor/consultant, spiritual adviser, traditional paddler of Chumash canoes, a preschool teacher and a tribal Elder.

From Bakersfield to Bath, Alan has been an advocate for Indigenous people and a voice for land conservation. He's been featured on the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County Voices of L.A. Nature series and has been a member of the California Indian Advisory Council for the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History and is currently on the Elder’s Council for the Fernandeno Tataviam Band of Mission Indians.

Alan will share traditional stories, talk about ongoing land and cultural conservation efforts, the role native plants played in Chumash and Tataviam cultures & much more!

Poppy Hour is our California native plant internet mashup. Part interviews, part garden tour, part happy hour, we explore the amazing diversity of people and ideas that connect to Southern California plants and landscapes.
