Participants are welcome to register for the full 3-workshop series or individual classes.

Online on Zoom / Streaming live from Portland, OR & Cleveland, OH, USA / Preregistration required

Explore the richness of Ukrainian traditional harmony singing with two marvelous masters of Ukrainian folksong, Nadia Tarnawsky and Inna Kovtun. These workshops are open to singers of all ages, genders, backgrounds, and levels of experience. All songs will be taught in the oral tradition. Ability to read Ukrainian or musical notation is not required and some time in each workshop will be spent on creating an authentic Ukrainian village sound appropriate to each song’s region of origin.

Folders containing song resource materials will be shared with all participants prior to each workshop.

Sunday, September 25, 2022 / Workshop 3: Vesillya - The Wedding

A traditional Ukrainian wedding is an occasion which takes place over several days and has many significant events - the arrival of the matchmakers, the engagement, the making of the wedding bread, the dressing of the bridal couple, the blessings bestowed by the parents, the ritual of marriage, the celebration, saying farewell to the bride. Each of these moments is accompanied by the song. This workshop will allow you to delve into some of these song traditions.


INNA KOVTUN is a folklorist and ethnographer, a researcher and collector of folklore traditions, a performer, and an educator. She is the highly regarded musical and artistic director of the “Rozhanytsya” folk ensemble based in Kyiv, the lead vocalist of the international project “EDK”, and the lead singer of the ethno-rock band “Astarta”. Inna is also the Deputy General Director of the Kyiv Municipal Brass Orchestra. She has performed and given workshops all around the world.

NADIA TARNAWSKY received a Fulbright award in 2017 and has taught Ukrainian village style singing in workshops for the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv, Ukraine, the Center for Traditional Music and Dance in New York, the Kitka Women's Ensemble, Village Harmony, and Dunava, among others. In 2011, she was granted a Traditional Arts Fellowship from Artist Trust and an Artist Support Residency from Jack Straw Productions. Nadia sang with Ensemble Hilka of New York in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the Chornobyl disaster in Ukraine.
