Event Details

Lurie Garden, Midwest Groundcovers and The Nature Conservancy are teaming up to celebrate pollinators! Join us for an in-depth study of pollinators and how garden design and plant choice can help support them.

Monarchs

Monarchs are one of the most recognized and loved butterflies! Take a brief adventure with Janie Grillo, the Monarch Maven of Midwest Groundcovers who has been raising and tagging monarch butterflies since 2001, to learn about their incredible lifecycle of the Monarch and fascinating annual migration to Mexico. The talk will also recommend plants to help conserve and create habitat for these amazing little wonders.

Planning & Planting for Pollinators
Through this presentation, the audience will gain an understanding of how the worlds of ecology and horticulture can successful integrate to inform garden design, plant selection, and management. Lurie Garden will be used as a real-world example of this ecologically-informed gardening approach. Specific plant selections, planting combinations, and garden management/maintenance approaches will be discussed.

Guided Pollinator Walk
Join Nature Conservancy scientists and Lurie Garden director and head horticulturist, Laura Ekasetya for a chance to see and learn about the wide variety of native and non-native pollinators that thrive right here in Illinois. We’ll be on the look-out for various types of bees, wasps, butterflies, beetles and other species. The walk will also include in-depth information on the design and the plants of Lurie Garden and how they benefit (and benefit from) pollinators. Dress appropriately for the weather, including a hat and sunscreen.
