Description

Politics and Paranoia: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at How Power Corrupts

Topic for the February 26 session of "Torah for Everyone" series

Beneath the idealized version of King David, the most famous ruler of the Jewish people, is a complex tale of how power corrupts those who wield it.

The Israelites demanded a king -- for protection againsgt their enemies -- as they moved from wandering to nationhood. In public their ruler presented his actions as pious and selfless. Yet looking closely we see how his family, friends, morals, and religion became part of his self-serving efforts to hold on to his kingship at all costs.

We'll explore the dangers and pitfalls of centralized power through the lens of this story in an open environment led by Rabbi Bridget Wynne. All are welcome, and no questions will be considered "silly."

About the Series

Are you curious about what's actually in the Torah, and whether it might be meaningful to you? While the Torah, and its continuation in the Hebrew Bible, are core texts of Jewish tradition, they can appear intimidating, irrelevant, boring, or even offensive.

Yet looked at from a sophisticated, adult perspective, rather than the literal understanding or children’s stories we may have experienced, these texts can be a rich source of wisdom for grappling with today’s real-life issues: ethics, family, work, politics, money, happiness …

Join us to experience the Torah and its continuation in the Hebrew Bible, plus relevant commentaries, in this twice-monthly class led by Rabbi Bridget Wynne in an open environment. Each session focuses on a specific portion of the text and relevant issues it brings up.

No prior experience or knowledge of Hebrew is required.

WHEN: We meet twice monthly on the second and fourth Wednesday of the month, 7:00-9:00pm, October-June, with some exceptions due to holidays.

WHERE: We meet in Berkeley.

WHO: Newcomers of all ages and backgrounds are always welcome. You don't need to be Jewish to draw on Jewish wisdom. Please feel free to invite friends who may be interested.

HOW: The fee per session is $30.

TO PAY AT THE CLASS: To pay at the class rather than online, click the green Register button, fill in the amount of the payment, and click Checkout. On the checkout page under the Payment section click on Payment Method and select Pay at the door, then fill out the rest of that page and submit it.
