Event description

Description

Join Latino Coalition for a Healthy California (LCHC), the Greenlining Institute, and UCLA Latino Policy & Politics Initiative (LPPI) for a networking reception and policy briefing on California’s Latino Physician Crisis. Light refreshments and a no-host bar will be served followed by a brief policy program.

While California’s Latino population has grown to become the state’s plurality at almost 40 percent, Latinos comprise just 11.6 percent of graduating physicians across California’s medical schools, which include the six medicals schools within the University of California. At California’s current Latino MD graduation rates the state's Latino physician crisis would not be solved until the year 2515, almost five centuries from now. Additionally, nearly 44 percent of Californians speak a language other than English at home and about 19 percent are categorized as Limited-English Proficient, yet the state's physician workforce is ill-equipped to serve the 12.1 million residents who speak Spanish, Vietnamese, Filipino, and Thai/Laotian at home. Learn more about this critical policy challenge and hear from a distinguished panel of experts and practitioners on the reforms necessary to promote meaningful change to the California's health care system.
