NOTE: This class provides a very unique opportunity to stay at the historic Chief's House, and as such has a very limited capacity of 6 people. Register soon to reserve your spot!

Originally built for the officer in charge of the nearby Lifeboat Station, the Chief’s House at Chimney Rock offers grand vistas of Drakes Bay and the Point Reyes headlands. This weekend photo retreat will combine field and classroom presentations in one of the most stunning locations on the California coast.

This location-centric weekend photo retreat will focus on the area of the Point Reyes Headlands, Chimney Rock, the Lighthouse, and the Historic Lifeboat Station. The class incorporates guided shoots in the field and classroom presentations. The field sessions will focus on taking a visual assessment of subject and lighting conditions, or looking for the more subtle subject matter, and how best to photographically capture subjects through composition, use of camera settings, and lens selection. We will also spend time learning how to work on images after-capture, including editing and post-processing using programs like Lightroom and Photoshop. Class presentations will cover topics like developing strong personal vision and digital imaging. The workshop concludes with a photo critique and review of the work that was created over the weekend. The class will involve some short-distance light hiking over slightly uneven terrain.

Chief’s House

Built in 1927 for the commanding officer of the nearby Lifeboat Station, the Chief’s House is heated, has 7 sleeping quarters, an equipped home kitchen, spacious living room, cozy den and great views amidst old trees overlooking Drakes Bay from a height.

What to Bring

Full service kitchen is provided. Please bring a refillable water bottle and all meals/snacks. The nearest stores and restaurants are miles away over country roads, so you will need to be self-sufficient. By tradition, Saturday night is pot-luck with everyone sharing food. So be sure to bring a dish to share for Saturday dinner, as well as food for yourself. There will be 7 people at the retreat.

Personal Gear

  • Participants should bring a camera (or cell phone), a tripod (if they have one)

  • Participants should ideally also bring a laptop computer and USB Flash Drive for editing images for class photo review and critique. FYI there is no Wifi or a phone at the Chief's House.

  • Warm, variable-weather, layered clothing (waterproof windbreaker or rain jacket, hat, gloves)

  • Hat and sunscreen

  • Comfortable walking shoes

  • Linens are provided. You may bring an extra sleeping pad for comfort, but the matresses are fairly comfortable.

  • Ear plugs (in case of snorers)

  • Personal toiletries (shampoo, soap, bath towel, etc.) There is only 1 shower at the Chief's House. Please be prepaired to share the space with others.

  • Insect repellant

  • Flashlight or headlamp
