About this month’s poets:

Susan Dworski Nusbaum received her BA from Smith College and her law degree from the University of Buffalo Law School. She lives in Buffalo NY where she has worked as a teacher, arts administrator, and most recently as a criminal prosecutor. Her poetry collection, What We Take With Us, was released in 2014. Her second poetry collection, Open Wide, the Eye, was released in 2016.

Her work has appeared in numerous publications including The Connecticut Review, Poetry East, Nimrod International Journal, Chautauqua Literary Journal, Wisconsin Review, A Celebration of Western New York Poets and others.

She is a participant in the Chautauqua Institution Writers’ Festivals and Chautauqua Writers’ Center poetry workshops, and has served on the Board of the Chautauqua Literary Arts Friends.

For Doug Knowlton the memory of writing a first poem harks back to 1966. Influences came and went: Tennyson, Emily, Frost, Stevens and Teasdale, too many to name. I remember having to memorize a portion of Thanatopsis in school, and the school paper printed a first published poem my Junior year. On student-teacher day in high school I taught a class on Frost --- but it wasn’t until Oscar Chudinowsky, bookseller, and proprietor of Oscar’s Books in my hometown of Huntington, NY handed me a copy of Leaves of Grass that a deep identification began to emerge. Writing poetry would be how all the crazy feelings and ideas and rushes of meaning might be understood – or at least expressed – if only as a conversation with the paper. I only publish chapbooks now for friends and family, my aspirations are minimal. I’ll be happy to put it all in a box one day and scrawl Oeuvre on the cover.

Joanna Fox teaches creative writing at Booker Middle School. She found poetry by teaching it and then writing the assignments alongside her students. Joanna recently received the Maya Angelou Teacher of Poetry Award through Penguin Random House. One of the quotes on the wall of her classroom states, "Words will take you places." She leads her students by example having been to Prague and throughout the United States with poetry as her ticket.

Don McLagan is an entrepreneur and poet. He writes poetry with the Concord Poetry Center and the Edgartown Poets Collective, and has published a book of poetry, Tug at the Knot. An innovator of business information services for forty years, he is now retired and advises entrepreneurial CEOs.

Don has a B.S. (1964) and a B.S.M.E. (1965) degrees from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut and an MBA from Harvard Business School (1967).
