Description

SPOKEN WORD: Poetry & Power

Together we will explore themes of identity, perception and power. Participants will draw from memory and lived experience to produce a poetic piece that challenges stereotypes and societal misperceptions in order to re-write their truths.

This workshop is part of OneLife Institute's Transformative Visions series, and is offered free of charge thanks to funding from the Akonadi Foundation.

Instructor Bio

Jazz Hudson is a poet, actress, educator, and activist gracing stages and providing consciousness to her listeners by sharing her perspective about the issues of today’s society, while attracting them to her words of wisdom and life-altering experiences. She has appeared on stage with Mos Def, Susan Taylor, Michael Eric Dyson, and and in high school classrooms all over the SF Bay Area. Jazz has also shared her work in social justice arenas such as rallies for Oscar Grant, Black August events, and Soulciety’s Empowerment showcase. She is a former Brave New Voices International Teen Poetry Slam Finalist. Jazz travels around the country presenting workshops to at-risk teens helping them to become critical thinkers, considering how the decisions they make will affect their lives. She is known to break through barriers of the most hard-hearted youth to help them deal with internalized issues that are central to their personal development. FAQs

What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?

Oakstop is conveniently located on BART and bus lines. If driving we recommend that you use one of the nearby lots, rather than street parking, since street parking is limited to 2-hours. We prefer participants not have to leave the workshop to move their car or feed the meter. You can use this platform to locate lots and compare costs: http://www.parkme.com
