From sonnets to limericks to haikus, poetry forms can be an exciting way to explore subject matter in a new way. But it can also be intimidating: What else rhymes with “cat”? You want how many syllables in that line? And what the heck is meter?

If you’re struggling to give form to your free verse poetry, this workshop is for you. We'll look at how the techniques of formal poetry show up in—and inform—contemporary styles with structure and meaning. We will read like poets and discuss how to reverse-engineer great poems and innovate on traditional styles to make them fresh. You will also do writing exercises to generate new material and get tips on editing your existing poems so that the form and meaning mirror each other.
