Poetry for STAAR with Gretchen Bernabei

February 18, 2020 in Richardson

8:00 am - 2:30 pm

Are you looking for enjoyable, concrete ways to weave reading and writing together in one class period?

How do you teach students to joyfully read, analyze, and write poems?

And how can poetry lessons give a leg-up to your STAAR reading and writing scores?

Gretchen Bernabei and Laura Van Prooyen have put together a wonderful new process to “pop the hood” on a poem to discover what makes it work, using text structures to unlock the engine of a poem. Teachers will participate in the modeled lessons, reading and re-reading a poem closely, to identify the author’s craft and text structure of the poem, and to leverage what they have learned to write their own evocative poems.

All participants will receive a copy of Text Structures from Poetry, with 50 classroom-ready lessons, as well as access to a TEKS alignment document.

Included in this resource:

  • Teaching notes for unlocking the text structure of a poem and the engine that makes it work.
  • Tips for exploring rhyme scheme, meter, and fixed forms.
  • Instructional sequences that vary the ways students can read and write poems and other prose forms.
  • Ideas for revising and publishing student poems.
  • A “Meet the Contemporary Authors” section that includes fascinating messages from the contemporary poets.
  • Tools for noticing author’s craft in everything your students read
  • Tools for collecting and using author’s craft in everything your students write

STAAR focus also included in this workshop:

  • Jennifer Martin’s “Stemology” strategy for improving multiple choice reading scores
  • QA12345 strategy for writing constructed response questions and answers

Teach your students to learn about poetry using the magic of poems themselves and lead the way to a rewarding love of poetry for teachers and students alike.

Who should attend?

  • Anyone teaching writing (pre-K through 12)
  • Anyone who lays the instructional foundation (grades 4-11) for STAAR writing and reading tests

Is this the same as Gretchen's previous workshops?

It’s different. Participants will learn how to use poems to blend reading and writing in a clear, simple sequence: free writing, reading, closer reading, analysis, structural analysis, and composing. And for the first time, we will use this resource to prepare for the changes in the new STAAR test, in anticipation of constructed response questions.

What people are saying:

How many workshops have you been to that found you glancing at your watch and then checking it again only to realize the interval between your wrist-flips were a mere minute apart? Innumerable, I’m sure. Gretchen’s workshops are not like those. Really. Time is an Olympic gold medal winner at her conferences. Oh, and the material is brilliant, easy to introduce, and it truly helps student writing improve while maintaining each child’s unique voice. I’ll be back as often as I can. Watches not necessary. ~Winston Hammonds, Killeen ISD

After 7 weeks of panicking about the New TEKS and teaching 2 STAAR subjects, Gretchen has calmed my nerves. Using her techniques, I feel I CAN do this! I am so excited to begin this in my classroom! My students aren’t going to know what hit them! Yes, I will use “pitchforking”! I’m a country girl! Thank you! ~Dawn Huckabee, Reagan County ISD

Wow!!! This training by the “Queen Bee” herself, Gretchen Bernabei was simply the best !! I’ve been a nervous wreck since finding out I’d be teaching writing in addition to reading to my fearless fourth grade babes. Gretchen has eased my fears and I feel confident with her tools and tricks!! ~Kathy Silva, Floresville ISD

I’m a new fourth grade teacher and I LOVE that I now have strategies I can immediately take back to my classroom. (Not to mention STAAR tips and tricks.) I highly recommend to anyone teaching writing! ~Kristin Buss, Northside ISD

Wowzers! I am so excited to get back to my classroom and start implementing these tools. I know my students are going to enjoy this so much more than what I am doing now. Thank you for all the time and effort you have put into this. My head is full of knowledge, now it’s time to share it with my students. ~Amie Lake, Thorndale ISD

Gretchen Bernabei techniques are a fantastic blend of STAAR focused writing and personal, authentic communication and expression that our students desperately need! With these tools, I feel like my students have the opportunity to grow their writing skills in a way that is meaningful! ~Jayme Elder-Torres, Harlingen CISD

This workshop was mind-blowing. My brain did a roundoff, double layout full out with all the tips and tools you gave me. Thank you! ~Marisa Ramirez, McAllen ISD
