Event description

Description

Poetry is art!

This new drop-in homeschool class will focus on a different form of poetry during each session.

Middle school students – AM class

High school students – PM class

Students will experience published poetry and will write original poems. Initial activities may include ice breakers and simple poetry formats. As trust is established, different forms of poetry will be introduced that allow youth to dig deeper into the concepts being discussed. Writer’s craft (e.g., simile, foreshadowing, compression, alliteration, etc.) will be taught to bring their words to life. Active listening strategies are taught to increase effective communication skills within the group setting. Once the reading and analysis are completed, then the fun really begins. Participants transform their words into art. For example, after a session on haiku poems, they experience watercolors and effective painting techniques. Once the paintings are dry, they will rewrite a favorite haiku on the watercolor. All sessions end with a final product that combines the art and the poetry.

Hope at Hand is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that provides poetry lessons for at-risk and vulnerable youth in North Florida. Steffani Hendricks Fletcher, a Jacksonville, FL native, launched Hope at Hand after 23 years with Duval County Public Schools. Her teaching experience includes both inner city and suburban magnet schools; in addition, she has worked with Dr. Nile Stanley at UNF, an Associate Professor of Childhood Education and Literacy, as an adjunct instructor offering after school poetry classes. Mrs. Fletcher earned BA in Elementary Education and a MA in Educational Leadership. She also has national certifications from American Montessori Society and International Federation of Biblio/Poetry Therapy. (And…a proud graduate of Leadership Jacksonville 2015!)

If you are looking for poetry instruction for your student, you are in the right place!
