Penned Up: Writing Out the Pandemic
Readings and conversations with the Applegate Poets of Southern Oregon.
This livestream hosted by Ginna BB Gordon features readings by seven of Southern Oregon’s Applegate Poets: Lisa E Baldwin, Diana Coogle, Beate Foit, Seth Kaplan, H. Ní Aódagaín, Joan Peterson, and Christin Lore Weber.
Each poet will read several works from the Applegate Poets' 2021 collection, Penned Up. The text will be displayed onscreen as the poets read.
Penned Up is a product of the shared work of the Applegate Poets. Some poems in this collection are intensely personal. Some are spiritual, some humorous, some political, some thought-provoking or challenging. The poems are varied, as are the backgrounds of the poets, but all seven poets have a love of poetry and a love of their home in the beautiful Applegate region of Southern Oregon.
All of the poems come from an interior depth, the spiritual, psychological, and creative footing each poet found during the pandemic by penning poetry and sharing it with each other.
The Applegate is a rural valley in Southern Oregon, a place of farms and vineyards by the Applegate River, a place of tranquility and natural beauty. The Applegate Poets all take inspiration and joy from the place where they live. Their poetry reflects that home, whether it talks directly about it or has it as an underlying base.
Former Oregon Poet Laureate Lawson Inada was right: The Applegate Poets have a unique perspective from which to create poetry.
