Description

open mic ~ 3 minutes ~ original poetry

Feature poet: Lesh

Lesh is a qualified Medical Doctor and is currently working as a Management Consultant at KPMG. But when Lesh is not selling out corporate style, he’s slam poet-ing, poetry slamming, performing or planting poet-trees. Lesh started performing poetry in June 2018 when, as sheer dumb luck would have it, he won his first ever slam at BPS. This gave Lesh the opportunity to collaborate with a group of powerful poets, warrior wordsmiths and just generally amazing human beings as part of the team ‘Mouthful of Melanin’ which won the 2018 BPS Grand Slam. For Lesh, poetry isn’t just about the performance, wit and wordplay. It’s more about fostering a sense of community among those who not only appreciate the art form, but take the leap, put themselves out there and step up to the mic. Hence, unsurprisingly, Lesh has recently become a regular at Poetica Bondi which provides a platform for artists of all ages, backgrounds and experience to share their passion for poetry in a safe space.

Feature singer songwriter: Declan Kelly

Declan Kelly was born in Sydney, Australia to an Irish Father and a Maori mother. These strong ancestral ties paved the way for a creative and musical life. His Mother ‘Salley’, a singer, exposed Declan to the life of a musician and from an early age he took to the drums and guitar, singing to come later in life.

Declan grew up in Balmain in a thriving music scene, the perfect place for a budding musician. Here he met Alex Lloyd and other musicians to form his first band The Beefs. After high school he was headhunted by one of the hardest working Rhythm and Blues bands, The Bond Cigars and immediately began touring rigorously and really honing his craft as a musician and soon to be songwriter. He recorded an album with them before parting four years later in his early 20s to form other bands and eventually write and pen his own tunes. His first album, Tales from the Neighbourhood debuted in 2005 to great acclaim and saw Declan play the festival scene around Australia. His love of roots/reggae and Polynesian harmony won the respect of many of his peers.

On his second album Adrift Declan’s songwriting matured to be more moving and personal. Two songs from this album, Far and Away and Hold the Light were featured in the BBC series Top of the Lake, directed by Jane Campion.

Declan also collaborated on an awareness and fundraising album called ‘Diesel n Dub’ showcasing a collection of Reggae and Dub versions of Midnight Oil songs featuring a stellar cast (including Katie Noonan, Alex Lloyd, Emma Donovan and Radical Son). Proceeds go to the Indigenous Literacy foundation. This dynamic show toured throughout Australia and featured at the Byron Bay Blues and Roots festival and several others over the years.

Declan continues to perform, write and record at his studio 'The Nest' in Surry Hills. His latest single 'Carry Me' is out now.
