Wentworth moved from New England to the Lowcountry in 1989, lives in Charleston and has been the Poet Laureate of South Carolina since 2003.

Wentworth’s most recent collaborations include We Are Charleston, Tragedy and Triumph at Mother Emanuel, with Herb Frazier and Dr. Bernard Powers and Out of Wonder: Poems Celebrating Poets with Kwame Alexander and Chris Colderly. She also wrote what the water gives me, a 2002 collaboration with artist Mary Edna Fraser. Her books of poetry include Noticing Eden, Despite Gravity, The Endless Repetition of an Ordinary Miracle, Nightjars and New and Selected Poems. She is the co-writer with Juan Mendez of Taking a Stand, The Evolution of Human Rights, and co-editor with Kwame Dawes of Seeking: Poetry and Prose inspired by artist Jonathan Green. Her children’s story Shackles earned the 2009 Silver Medal in the Moonbeam Children's Book Awards.
