Description

COURSE TITLE: Ethics: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

INSTRUCTOR: Gabby Ritter, MMT, MT-BC

ABSTRACT: Professional ethics are affected by every aspect of a therapist’s personal and professional lives. Therapists are often unaware how their own personal worldview, values, and bias inform their personal and professional ethics. Even a therapist’s choice of therapeutic orientation will have ethical implications. Agency policies and procedures, state statutes, and laws also affect professional ethics. Through this course, participants will explore how their personal worldview, values, and bias inform their ethics; increase their overall familiarity with the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) Code of Ethics; be informed of laws within North Carolina and South Carolina that relate to the legal and ethical duty to warn and duty to protect within their state; and apply the AMTA Code of Ethics to their professional practice through ethical referrals, assessments, treatment plans, termination, and documentation. Ethical dilemmas will be presented to demonstrate concepts. There are no prerequisites to attend this CMTE event.

LEARNER OBJECTIVES: 1. Participants will increase their familiarity with the AMTA Code
of Ethics (IV.B).
2. Participants will be informed of laws within North Carolina and South Carolina that
relate to the legal and ethical duty to warn and duty to protect within their state (II.B).
3. Participants will apply the AMTA Code of Ethics to their professional practice through
ethical referrals, assessments, treatment plans, termination, and documentation (I.II.III).
4. Participants will explore how their personal worldview, values, and bias both positively
and negatively inform their ethics (IV).
