Topic: Using Project Management Skills to Make a Difference in the Community
2 PDUs*
*1 Leadership and 1 Technical PDU Category

Speakers: Paul and Martha Sharkey

Paul and Martha Sharkey will walk you through their difficult journey of having and caring for twin girls born at just 23 weeks and 5 days gestation and how they used this experience as a way to help other families of premature babies.

As they cared for their twin girls in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the Sharkey’s realized that parents of premature babies need support during this critical time and they knew that they wanted to make a difference in the lives of these parents.

How did the Sharkey’s make a difference? In 2010, they founded a non-profit organization, Today is a Good Day, with the sole mission of providing personal and financial support to families of premature babies as they cared for the children in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Paul and Martha quickly realized that project management skills would be key in making Today is a Good Day a viable and sustainable organization.

They created an initiating process group to socialize their idea. This group provided feedback on mission scope and the costs to become a 501(c)3.  Today is a Good Day has an ongoing executing process group to plan and execute their fundraisers --Pints for Preemies and Grateful for Today Brunch. Over the past two years, these events have raised close to $50,000 for the organization.

Over the past 3.5 years, Today is a Good Day has provided over 1000 care packages to families in need.  Also, a local Preemie Parent Network has been established, 12 families have received direct financial support, and the organization has created a strong partnership with Abington Memorial Hospital and other area hospitals.

Paul and Martha strongly believe in the value of volunteerism and hope that their story will inspire others to contribute their time to volunteer work.
