Event description

Description

For many youth leaving foster care, there is no safety net.

Each year, nearly 25,000 youth emancipate or "age out" of the foster care system, over 1,000 in Illinois alone. Young adults are often discharged from care with no one to call family and nowhere to go. Without a support network, many fall prey to homelessness, trafficking, incarceration, and/or drug abuse. But we can change that!

Safe Families PLUS, in conjunction with the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS), provides caring mentors to youth ages 14 to 21 as they transition to adulthood. Through consistent one-on-one contact at least twice per month, mentors help youth explore their self-identity, talents, strengths, and career interests.

If you are an adult age 25 and over with a desire to mentor a youth or young adult for at least (1) year, this training will provide information on best practices in mentoring, adolescent brain development, the impact of trauma, and an overview of the specific needs of youth involved in the child welfare system.

Live fingerprinting will be available for those who need to complete background checks. Please bring your state-issued photo ID.
