Event description
PLAY, LAY, AYE, Act III installation and event exploring sculpture, inclusivity and public spaces

About this Event

Commuter Biennial and Friends of The Underline present PLAY, LAY, AYE a modular sculpture by GeoVanna Gonzalez examining the way public art can be used to create spaces that are more inclusive and queer.

For Act III, the sculpture will be installed below Metrorail in phase 2 of the future Underline for just one day. From 6-8:30 PM, the public is invited to this free event to explore the sculpture with an exclusive performance by Sydney Rabin and scoops by Dasher & Crank.

Getting There: Take Metrorail or Metromover to Brickell and walk south, walk, bike or rideshare to the open space below Metrorail across from Novotel Brickell Miami entrance on the corner of SW 1st Avenue and SW 15th Road.

About PLAY, LAY, AYE: Gonzalez explores the ability for something or someone to be simultaneously in flux and stable. Highlighted by the structures’ endless orientations, PLAY, LAY, AYE honors the intersectional realities of our identities. In each presentation, performance responds to this duality. Here, we hold space for artists and activists, POC, womxn, queer, trans and gender non-conforming folks, who navigate their art as a form of self-empowerment.

About Commuter Biennial: Commuter Biennial is a Knight funded public art exhibition taking place throughout Miami-Dade County from July through October 2019. This exhibition aims to highlight commuter experiences of the Miami metro area by activating unconventional and underutilized locations. In activating these areas, the biennial seeks to redefine the places we consider home. The Biennial intends to democratize access to art through a series of artistic commissions across a wide range of styles and mediums that intersect high and low concepts and modalities.

Commuter Biennial is made possible with the generous support of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation through a Knight Arts Challenge grant, with the support of Miami-Dade County, and the State of Florida Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs. The exhibition is organized by the Gables Hispanic Cultural Foundation with the support of the Miami Foundation. For more information visit thecommuterbiennial.org.

About Friends of The Underline: Our mission is to deliver and activate a 120-acre, world-class linear park spanning 10-miles below Miami’s Metrorail that will transform regional mobility and celebrate diversity, culture and lifelong learning. Through innovative urban trails and creative programming, we are connecting people to their environment and each other to create a safe, healthy, equitable, and sustainable community.
