Event description

Description

Basic PL*ART | Level l

Frustrated by the amount of single-use, post-consumer plastic bags and packaging that streams through your life? Now you can turn it into art. This class will give you the basics of PL*ART, plastic art. You will learn how to fuse layers of plastic together to transform everyday recycling into something beautiful. There will be demonstrations, and you will learn the best plastic bags and packaging to use, and which to stay away from. You will learn to make the basic material from which all PL*ART is created.

PL*ART Materials -
There is no materials charge. However, students who wish to make their own basic PL*art piece need to bring the following: An everyday iron, a paperback book, and as much plastic as they can gather (the more, the better!). For example: bags that newspapers are delivered in; grocery bags; shopping bags; vegetable bags; diaper packaging; bubble wrap; etc. Start hoarding it now. Make Art! Not Landfills!

BIO
Mary O’Neill is a former “creative,” an advertising copywriter and voice-over talent who wrote, produced and appeared in dozens of radio and television ads. O’Neill has also dabbled in the fine arts over the years, taking numerous fine-art classes at Cranbrook Academy of Art and the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center. She is based in Leelanau County, Michigan and sells her PL*ART creations at local art fairs and galleries. She won the 2018 Suttons Bay Art Festival poster contest, and was awarded an Honorable Mention at the 2017 Petoskey Art in the Park. Frustrated by the amount of plastic resulting from running a tiny retail shop, O’Neill came up with the idea for PL*ART in 2009.
