Event description
Hear from an editor about what you need to think through about your editing and release formats - before you start shooting.

About this Event

In this digital 4-8K era, you really should be planning your post while you are deciding on your camera. Whether you will work with an editor, or on your own, you have to think through the specs for your shoot (pix and sound), your offline edit workflow, and ahead to your release format – especially if you are working on a long term doc. And for those considering work as AEs (assistant editors) or DITs (Digital Imaging Technicians) – we’ll go over what you should know. Steph Ching, director and editor, whose own films include the feature doc After Spring will present along with Cecilia Chien, a DIT who specializes in high speed cameras, and works at Arrirentals.

This is also cosponsored by Black Public Media and Reel Sisters of the Diaspora Film Festival.

STEPH CHING is a Brooklyn based filmmaker. She directed and produced After Spring, a feature documentary that focuses on the Syrian refugee crisis. The film was executive produced by Jon Stewart and premiered at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival. It is a recipient of a grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and a Frontline Award for Documentary Journalism. Prior to directing After Spring, she attended New York University's Tisch School of the Arts and was Associate Producer and Additional Editor of the Emmy Nominated documentary Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon. She is also one of DOC NYC's inaugural "40 Under 40" list. She has worked as an assistant editor on The Fourth Estate, Take Your Pills and Cameraperson. She also served as Post-Production Supervisor and Associate Editor on Alison Klayman's The Brink (Sundance 2019.) Steph was born in Massachusetts and is the proud daughter of Hong Kong immigrants.

CECILIA CHIEN is a DIT that specializes in High Speed Cameras. She works at ARRI Rental as a DIT / Service Tech for 11 years. She has worked onset as a union member of Local 600. Before this role, she has worked in visual effects as a systems administrator, machine control room op, and as a junior/assistant Flame operator in Nickelodeon, VH1, and Framestore NY. She holds a Computer Science degree from NYU. Recently she joined the BAFTA-NY in 2019.
