About this Event

As family members, we can't seem to prepare enough. We are always thinking about "what will happen if..." Let us take you from feeling immobilized by the overwhelming thoughts by providing a way to learn so that when you are ready, you may take decisive action!

Speakers Include:

Keynote: Shauna Farabaugh is a certified Somatic Sex Educator and certified Tension and Trauma Releasing Exercises (TRE®) provider who fiercely believes in the right to sexual expression for every body and is committed to making sex education and counseling more “sexcessible.” When it comes to talking about sexuality, people with disabilities are often left out of the conversation.  The truth is all humans are sexual beings who need access to accurate information, resources, and skills to enable them to make healthy decisions about sexuality and relationships. Shauna will provide the strategies, tips, and tools you need to approach the "dreaded discussion" with comfort and confidence.

Ann Sieber, Home & Community Based Services  Learn about the changes that affect Day Programs, Residential Care Facilities, Supported Living Services, and Employment Services. Individuals must receive services in the most integrated settings of their choosing and also have full access to the benefits of community living. Settings where individuals live and receive services must be about the nature and quality of individuals’ experiences, rather than the type of buildings where the services are delivered.

Joanna Jaeger is one of the pioneers with Self Determination and has developed a robust program for her son, Alex. Joanna Jaeger's son, Alex, was the first person in the state to begin the recent rollout of self-determination successfully. Joanna helps others move through the process and is excited to share their successes, insights, and reflections. As the mother of two young adults, one with autism, both with Type 1 diabetes, Joanna brings decades of knowledge. All along her journey, Joanna has been a regular presenter at conferences across the state and a long-time volunteer with Parents Helping Parents, www.php.com, in San Jose, CA, providing supports to families of children with a wide range of special needs as a mentor parent, advocate, fundraiser, and Board member. In the afternoon the "Open Learning Marketplace" provides for customized learning!

At The Planning Ahead Conference attendees will have the opportunity to “post” learning topics or questions on the Learning Marketplace schedule and claim a time and place for the learning/sharing to take place. Participants are then invited to sign up to attend any of the topics that they would like to explore in more depth. These are formal and informal learning spaces. Technology is provided in several of the meeting spaces. We will spend 30 minutes prepping for this before lunch. It is the greatest way to learn what you want to know, or share what you already know!
