Event description
A 1-day workshop in Mt Maunganui for ECE & Primary Teachers, Parents, Carers and those learning with and playing alongside CHILDREN.

About this Event

Celia Hogan (Christchurch) from little kiwis nature play, joins us, in the Bay of Plenty after her SELL OUT workshop in 2019.

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

Place based learning is all about experiencing and exploring your local environment in meaningful ways. Having these types of experiences gives us opportunities to connect with our place, learn new things about our local spaces, learn to value them more, take care of them and to then be empowered to act in real ways.

Papatuanuku has shown us that the earth is hurting. Lockdown has shown us that if we make changes, we can heal our earth. Are we listening?

Through lockdown there has been a lot of time spent in our local environments. We explored, we experienced, we noticed, we were present. Did we like what we saw? Were we disheartened? Were we filled with Joy?

In this full-day workshop, we will explore place-based learning outside the classroom either within your grounds or in your local natural spaces. We will cover:

· The what, why and how of place-based learning

· Identifying barriers and opportunities for place-based learning in your setting

· What a culturally responsive approach could look like including kaitiakitanga

· How a play-based pedagogy can weave into place-based learning

· Developing an action plan for you to take away and make it happen

· Practical tips and ideas to help build confidence in teaching outside the classroom

· Group management in an outdoor setting, including a discussion on managing behaviours in an outdoor environment

Experiential learning principles will be applied during the workshop, and there will be opportunities for group discussion and personal reflection to ensure there are meaningful connections to apply back to your local environment.

ABOUT CELIA

Celia Hogan is passionate about getting children outdoors and into Nature. She is a strong advocate for child led play, nature play, risky play, building resilience, and improving mental health and well-being through nature. Celia originally studied outdoor recreation and adult education. For the past 20 years she has worked for a variety of outdoor education and personal development organisations. Celia works hard to change the face of education in New Zealand. She led a petition on the steps of parliament to enable full time nature-based kindergartens to start in New Zealand and her personal goal is to see every child spending at least 3 hours outside every day. To make this happen she runs professional development training, workshops and conferences for teachers and educators to boost their confidence and help them to get outside every day. She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience and has survived a variety of crisis' both professionally and personally to give some real depth to her conversations and believes mindset matters. Celia is a natural and welcoming speaker and manages to juggle speaking engagements, running her Bush Kindy sessions for pre-schoolers and their whanau and taking her own kids on mini adventures in nature.
