IP Protection 3: International Patent Protection: Basics and Tips

EnE club (Entrepreneur and Executive club), in an ongoing collaboration with the law firm of Perkins Coie LLP, is presenting a series of round table discussions on startup legal topics. This is the 6th session of the series and the 3rd session on IP issues for start-up companies. We are very excited to partner with HYSTA EDP to co-host this event.
IP is one of the key assets for startups and can play an important role in successful launch and growth of startups. IP protection in U.S. and other countries can be complex, expensive and time consuming. In this 3rd session on IP issues, Dr. Bing Ai of Perkins Coie will continue the discussion on IP strategies and practical business considerations beyond the US national borders under bilateral or multi-national treaties such as Paris Convention and Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT). Patent protection and enforcement in China will be used a case study to illustrate some common cross-border IP issues.
This third IP session is generally independent of the first two IP sessions and you are welcome to join us even if you missed the prior sessions on IP issues. As usual, Zhanping will kick off the initial discussion, and Bing will lead the discussion on IP protection. The session will be interactive and audience's participation is highly encouraged.
Seats are limited and individuals who already have registered businesses will be given priority.

Dr. Bing Ai is a patent attorney and partner at Perkins Coie LLP. He serves his clients out of both Palo Alto and San Diego offices of the firm. Bing graduated from Physics Department of Peking University and is currently a board member of San Diego Peking University Alumni Association.
Bing’s practice emphasizes U.S. and international patent protection, patent counseling and strategy, patent portfolio management, freedom to operate analyses, patent validity and infringement issues, patent post-grant proceedings including patent reexaminations, patent due diligence and support for patent litigation, and patent due diligence for corporate financing, investments, mergers and acquisitions. Bing has significant experience in advising start-up and emerging companies, universities and research institutes, and multinational corporations.
Bing was a physicist before entering patent practice. He practices in a wide range of technology fields, such as electronics, semiconductors, wireless devices and technologies, telecommunications, computer hardware, software, Internet-based technologies, data storage and memory materials and devices, display technologies, medical devices, surgical instruments, biomedical diagnostic technologies, biochemical sensors, energy-related technologies including batteries and fuel cells, lasers and optics, light sources including LED devices, nanotechnology, and material sciences.
Well versed in technology laws and regulations in China, Bing assists clients on patent issues and other technology-related legal issues in China, including patent litigations in China. Bing was featured in the April 2007 edition of The National Law Journal in the “Practice Leader’s Roundtable” discussion series, speaking on IP protection in China. Bing is the current chair of China Subcommittee of the U.S. chapter of International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI) under American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA).
