Event description
The Piscopia Initiative is hosting a monthly seminar series featuring female and non-binary mathematics researchers from UK universities.

About this Event

Our PiWORKS speaker for January is Professor Carola-Bibiane Schönlieb from the University of Cambridge, who is head of the Cambridge Image Analysis group.

Title: From differential equations to deep learning for image processing

Abstract: Images are a rich source of beautiful mathematical formalism and analysis. Associated mathematical problems arise in functional and non-smooth analysis, the theory and numerical analysis of partial differential equations, harmonic, stochastic and statistical analysis, and optimisation. Starting with a discussion on the intrinsic structure of images and their mathematical representation, in this talk we will learn about some of these mathematical problems, about variational models for image analysis and their connection to partial differential equations and deep learning. The talk is furnished with applications to art restoration, forest conservation and cancer research.

Sign up now to receive the Zoom details! The target audience for the talks are 3rd/4th year undergraduate and MSc students, but PhD students or academic staff are very welcome to attend. After the talk we will divide those who are interested into break-out rooms to allow for informal networking.

The aim of our monthly PiWORKS (Piscopia Initiative – Women and Other Researchers Keynote Series) seminar is threefold; we want to

1. Showcase the work of female and non-binary mathematics researchers.

2. Provide a taste of different areas of mathematics research to undergraduate and MSc students.

3. Build an UK-wide community of female and non-binary researchers and mathematics students.

The Piscopia Initiative (https://piscopia.co.uk) is a student-led outreach scheme that aims to encourage women and non-binary students to pursue a PhD.
