Author Michael Scott Moore was held hostage by pirates for almost three years in Somalia, a deeply Muslim part of the world. His memoir about the ordeal, The Desert and the Sea, is a powerfully informed and personal book on a topic few writers have managed to cover. He'll be in conversation with author and Arabic translator Peter Theroux.

In early 2012 Michael Scott Moore traveled to the Horn of Africa to research a book about Somali piracy and ways to end it. He was kidnapped and spent more than two and a half years as a hostage, shifted from camps in the desert bush to barren prison houses, and—for several months—he was held on a hijacked tuna ship. Here he chronicles the full story. Written with dark humor, candor but also a literary journalist’s clinical distance and eye for detail, The Desert and the Sea reads like Catch-22 meets Black Hawk Down.

Michael Scott Moore is a journalist and novelist, author of a comic novel set in L.A., Too Much of Nothing, as well as a travel book about surfing, Sweetness and Blood, which was named a best book of 2010 by The Economist and Popmatters. He covered the 2011 trial of ten Somali pirates in Europe for Spiegel Online, then traveled to Somalia in early 2012 to research a book. He was kidnapped and held hostage for 32 months.

Peter Theroux has translated numerous works of both historic and contemporary fiction by Egyptian, Iraqi and Lebanese authors. He's also written articles and published a travel book, Sandstorms, about his extensive travels in the Middle East. Alex Raksin in the Los Angeles Times described Sandstorms as a "stunningly candid portrait of culture and politics in the Middle East."
