Many have heard of Pat Tillman and his story, but for those who may not have...
Pat Tillman graduated from Arizona State University with a 3.8 GPA in addition to numerous athletic honors. A linebacker in college, Tillman switched to safety after being selected by the Arizona Cardinals with the 226th pick in the 1998 draft.
Tillman made a name for himself in the NFL as a hard-hitting safety, but he was widely hailed by those he knew as a caring individual, exemplary teammate, and a great leader. At one point, he turned down a $9 million offer from the then-St. Louis Rams to stay in Arizona and play for $512,000.
After 9/11, Tillman left the NFL to join the Army Rangers, serving tours in Iraq and Afghanistan prior to his death in 2004.
Tillman's friends and family started the Pat Tillman Foundation to honor his memory. The Foundation works to serve veterans, active-duty personnel, and their families through a network of support, scholarships, and professional opportunities. Each year up to 60 candidates are selected Tillman Scholars, allowing them to continue to further Pat Tillman's legacy.
