Pinel Advocates' Investment Funds Update: A Changing World will focus on the challenges and changes facing the investment funds market in the coming year.

Brexit, the US, MiFid II, BEPS and AIFMD will continue to provide uncertainty in a politically volatile world. Our speakers have significant investment funds experience through the UK, Jersey and internationally, both in private practice and in regulatory and inter-governmental negotiations.

Winston is a partner in Reed Smith’s private funds group. He advises clients on investment management law and regulation with an emphasis on alternative investment funds, their investment managers and investors.

Winston advises managers on their commercial arrangements and provides ongoing support to investment managers alongside the Reed Smith Regulatory Team.

Winston also focuses on advising UK pension schemes and international institutional investors, including sovereign wealth funds, on their managed account and fund investments across the spectrum of investment categories, including insurance wrapped products.

Winston is a contributing author to a hedge fund practitioner text.


Mike Jones is the Director of Policy at the Jersey Financial Services Commission (JFSC), and a member of the Executive Board.

Mike’s primary remit is the development and effective implementation of policies to the benefit of the Island and working with international and domestic policy makers. On an international stage, Mike and his team respond to EU Directives and international standard changes, as well as dealing with other international stakeholders. Locally the division’s focus is on improving and enhancing legislation, codes of practice, underlying rules and guidance, in addition to being active with domestic innovation for example FinTech.

Mike is a chartered member of the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investments, holds the Certificate and Diploma in Company Direction from the IoD, the Investment Advice Certificate and the Diploma in Investment Compliance. He is also a member of the Toronto International Leadership Centre for Financial Sector Supervision and regularly represents Jersey at international fora such as IOSCO where he currently is a member of Committee 5, 8 and the European Regional Committee.

Mike was responsible for the Island’s response to the AIFMD Directive. He previously worked on the group tasked with redrafting the IOSCO principles and methodology in relation to Collective Investment Funds and Hedge Funds.


Andrew established Pinel Advocates and has seventeen years’ experience in advising a range of clients on corporate and commercial, private client and investment funds matters.

Andrew regularly advises on the establishment of a range of Jersey investment fund structures, as well and fund changes, investor action and regulatory matters.

He was most recently praised by the Legal 500 for being "a good communicator with a commercial outlook" (Banking and Finance), also noting that he "shows considerable legal expertise" (Corporate and Commercial) and "deals with matters with a calm assurance" (Investment Funds).

Andrew is on the board of examiners for the Jersey legal exams, dealing with the Company Law, having previously marked the paper on the Security Interests (Jersey) Law 2012.


We are dedicated to helping underprivileged children. Since our inauguration Variety - Tent 52 have raised millions of pounds to help disabled and underprivileged children in Jersey. Tent 52 are also very forunate to have an extremely active Ladies section that contributes in many ways to the fund raising activities and are always available to lend a helping hand.

Variety in Jersey is part of a worldwide organization which is non-sectarian and which raises money to improve the quality of life for all children irrespective of their race, colour or creed. All the money raised in Jersey, remains in Jersey, and is used directly for the benefit of needy and disabled children.

Almost on a daily basis, requests come in from Schools, Health Visitors, Social Workers, Occupational Therapists and any other organisations who have direct dealings with families. These requests are for help with food, shoes, clothing, baby equipment and other basic needs. Variety also receive requests to provide specialized equipment for disabled children such as wheelchairs, walkers, electronic beds and special supportive buggies. All of these requests are for children from low income families and most often single parent families. Variety pay towards educational school trips, mostly to France for children whose parents cannot afford it, ensuring no child in the class is left behind. Variety's aim is to ensure that as far as possible all children have equal opportunities. Variety hold Summer and Christmas parties for children with special needs, their parents and siblings.
