The Embassy of the Czech Republic invites you to Pilsen: Past and Present, featuring the opening of an exhibit presented by renowned cartoonist Jiří Slíva and a presentation on Pilsen in the company of the Deputy Mayor of Pilsen, Michal Vozobule, on January 28, 2020, at 6 pm. Slíva's clever drawings have appeared in over 150 publications including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Los Angeles Times. The artist will be on hand to answer any questions about his work. Join us for an evening delving into Pilsen's rich history, culture, and economy.
The event is part of the celebrations surrounding the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Pilsen.
About the Artist: Jiří Slíva was born in Pilsen, Czech Republic on July 4, 1947, and currently resides in Prague. After completing his studies in economics, he spent eight years working as a teacher. Since 1979, he has worked as a freelance cartoonist, illustrator and graphic artist. Slíva’s first drawing was published in 1972 in the publication Mladá fronta. He has published over 15 of his own books of cartoons in Germany, Switzerland, France, the United States, and the Czech Republic. His drawings have appeared in more than 150 books and in many Czech and foreign newspapers and magazines such as The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Wall Street Journal, Playboy, Die Welt, Die Zeit, to name a few. For his creativity and talent, he has won many awards at cartoon festivals and has had solo exhibitions in Marienbad, Bratislava, Zurich, Moscow, Budapest, Warsaw, Berlin, Brussels, Amsterdam, Rome, Havana, Milan, Paris, New York, Tel Aviv, among others. Embassy Security Policy: For entrance, all guests will be subject to security screening. Photo ID is required. Bags and suitcase are not allowed. Only small purses are permitted but must be opened for inspection. Coat check is not available.
Parking: Non-metered parking is available on Spring of Freedom Street and Tilden Street.
Closest Metro: The Embassy is about a 15-20 minute walk from the Van Ness Metro Station
