Researchers commonly refer to any small preliminary investigation as a “pilot study” without understanding the purpose and intent of pilot studies. In this seminar, we will review the objectives of pilot studies and their role and importance as part of a larger research plan. After attending this seminar, participants will be able to 1) determine what aspects of their research should be “piloted”, 2) design an effective and efficient pilot study, and 3) understand how to build on pilot study results for subsequent investigations.
Understand when conducting a pilot study to get preliminary data is necessary
Be able to determine what data to collect from a pilot study for a future study or grant proposal
