Background

At over 23,000 views and nearly 900 posts, the "Heart Disease and Have We Been Doing it Wrong" thread has become one of the most popular threads in COPA forum history. Based on its overwhelming popularity and by popular demand (thanks everyone who suggested this), Karen and I have decided to host what may become the first annual COPA-WFPB (Whole Foods, Plant-Based) Fly-In nutrition and health symposium.

Why should you attend?

  • If you care about your health and your ability to maintain your FAA medical.
  • If you know a loved one who is struggling with chronic diseases like coronary artery disease, obesity, or Type II diabetes.
  • If you want to empower your children and grandchildren with the knowledge necessary to avoid many chronic diseases.
  • If you enjoy fly-ins and the chance to socialize with other pilots. Mostly COPAns, but I must warn you, there will be some Mooney and float plane drivers too!
  • If you love to eat delicious food and learn about new ways of cooking and eating!
  • If you enjoy visiting the natural beauty of Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

Cost $40 to help defray food and other expense. Includes:

  • Transportation to and from Minden airport.
  • Saturday afternoon symposium.
  • Lunch and dinner on Saturday. Brunch on Sunday to watch the webcast live.
  • Video Saturday evening.
  • Coffee, tea, and other non-alcoholic beverages provided. You are welcome to BYOB.

Fly in and out same day and get most of the content, or come back Sunday morning for brunch and to watch the special webcast with us.

If you choose to stay overnight, some local accommodations include:

Carson Valley (Minden, Genoa, and Gardnerville. Closest to event): Walley’s Hot Springs (http://www.davidwalleys-resort.com/Resort ), Holiday Inn Express, Carson Valley Inn.

Lake Tahoe (Stateline, NV or South Lake Tahoe, CA) 25 minutes: Edgewood Resort, Lakeside Inn, Marriott, Hard Rock, Harrah’s, Harvey’s, Mont Bleu, and many others.

Fly in a day or two early and/or stay a day or two late. There are lots of local attractions. See any Tahoe visitor’s guide. Here are a few, mostly in the valley, near our ranch:

Hiking: https://carsonvalleytrails.org/, https://tahoerimtrail.org/

Golf: http://www.genoalakes.com/, https://www.edgewoodtahoe.com/, https://www.carsonvalleygolf.com/

Mountain biking and road cycling. The Clear Creek Trail (see CVTA website link above) is a great local MTB trail of moderate difficulty. More challenging MTB rides are on and near the Tahoe Rim Trail. Indian Valley, about 10 min. from my ranch, is my favorite road bike ride. It’s rural, scenic, and has very little vehicle traffic. A little further away is the famous Flume Trail, which is usually ranked in the top ten scenic MTB rides in the country.

There are no local wineries, but if you enjoy an adult beverage, I have a couple of recommendations for a unique experience. The large Bently Ranch (which you will fly low over on short final to Rwy 34 at KMEV) has just opened their first class new distillery, tasting room, and bar. https://bentlyheritage.com/, with spirits made from locally grown grains. Also, in the little town of Genoa is the oldest saloon in the state of Nevada, the Genoa Bar http://www.genoabarandsaloon.com/. If you go, be sure to ask the bartender to tell about the large mirror behind the bar.
