Event Details

Are you slumping in your chair right now? Do you hear your Mom's voice in your head nagging you to stand up straight? Most importantly, do you have stiffness and/or pain in your neck, jaw, head, shoulders, back, pelvis, or hip joints?

Appropriate posture is becoming a lost art in modern civilization. This is especially concerning since wellness professionals refer to sitting as the new smoking. Poor posture is a major contributor to increased muscle strain, pinched nerves, herniated disks, advanced degeneration, diminished lung capacity and oxygen absorption, digestion problems, sciatica, Carpal Tunnel syndrome, Plantar fasciitis, headaches, neurological issues, depression, heart disease ... the list goes on and on.

Of course, the million dollar question is ... What should we do about it? We would all just love to avoid the activities that negatively affect our health and well-being, but the basic administration of day-to-day life makes that unrealistic if not impossible. Many of us have to commute long distances, sit (or stand) for long periods of time, sleep in different beds, lift heavy objects, focus on screens, operate on limited rest, take the stairs, etc. It's just not practical to cut out all of these activities, so we must actively mitigate their effects and fight the inevitable impact of gravity, age, and lifestyle.

However, proper posture is so much more complicated than your Mom's nagging comments about chin up, shoulders back, and straight spine.

In fact, proper posture is less abou
t rules and placement than it is about appropriate movement patterns, muscle recruitment, and core strength. When it comes to posture, we always try to achieve a statuesque endpoint by holding a pose as the perfect ideal. But posture needs to be dynamic, evolving, and progressive, instead of stiff, rigid, and resolute.

In this workshop, you will learn ...
-- The definition of posture and why it's important.
-- How correcting your posture can enhance the quality of your life and overall health.
-- How to identify and engage the muscles involved in proper posture.
-- How to sit in your office chair, car seat, couch, and bar stool.
-- Techniques and exercises to improve your posture from the inside out.
-- What exercise in general and Pilates in particular has to do with all of it.
