Event description

Description

The origin story of beach music makes for one of the most fascinating cultural histories of the Carolinas, and one of the salvos that breached segregation barriers in the Jim Crow South. “Piedmont Laureate Presents: On The Beach, A Short History of Beach Music” will bring together a panel of luminaries to talk about it, including Craig Woolard, frontman for North Carolina Music Hall of Famers The Embers; legendary beach-music deejays Ed “Charlie Brown” Weiss and Fessa John Hook; and journalist/historian Parke Puterbaugh, who is writing what will probably be the definitive history for University of North Carolina Press. 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 19, at Loafers Beach Club, Raleigh. Free.
