The Piscopia Initiative is hosting an afternoon of talks by female speakers in industry who have a PhD in Mathematics.
About this event
Are you thinking about a career in industry? Have you been enjoying your studies so far and want to continue doing maths? Did you know that doing a PhD can help with both?
If you would like to learn more about potential careers after your maths degree, attend our UK-wide PiDOORS (Piscopia Initiative – Doctors Outside Of Research Schools) free online event run by students, for students.
Women in mathematics who are currently working in industry will discuss their experiences doing a PhD in mathematics, PhD research, what it was like moving into industry after their PhD, and their current roles.
Sign up now to receive the Zoom details! The target audience for the talks are 3rd/4th year undergraduate and MSc students, but PhD students or academic staff are very welcome to attend.
Speakers
- Dr. Meire Fortunato is originally from Brazil. She obtained her PhD in Mathematics from the University of California at Berkeley. Her thesis was on mesh generation using numerical methods. Since 2016, she has been a research scientist at Google DeepMind.
- Dr. Sorcha Gilroy obtained her PhD in Natural Language Processing (specifically probabilistic models of graphs) from the University of Edinburgh and is currently a data scientist and data science team lead at Peak.ai
- Dr. Tendai Mugwagwa obtained her PhD in Theoretical Immunology from Utrecht University, the Netherlands. She is a visiting researcher at Imperial College London, has lectured at various AIMS (African Institute for Mathematical Sciences) centres and worked at Public Health England for several years as an infectious disease modeller.
