Event description

Description

Doors will open at 6:30 PM for a 7:00 PM start.

Everyone is welcome to this evening of looking and drawing in this powerfully atmospheric and beautiful space. Drawing is a great way to engage with the collection, record an emotional journey or a moment of discovery. It’s also an opportunity to explore your own creativity whether you are a beginner or a regular draughts-person. It’s a wonderfully immediate way to express yourself visually and a way of seeing more. The more you look the more you see. And there is so much to see here!

The evening is guided by Ellen Christiansen, an award winning artist with a wealth of experience of teaching, from beginners to advanced levels. We will have the opportunity to contemplate our own human frailty and fears in this extraordinary building through the medium of drawing. Ellen will assemble a dramatic set in the operating theatre itself using some of the extraordinary objects from the collection.

While in this space, facing the operating table, it’s impossible not to reflect on the experience of all the people who would have passed through the operating theatre, particularly the women who would have been treated here. All the doctors would have been male. Elizabeth Garret Anderson, the first female to qualify as a doctor in the uk, wasn’t even born until 1836. It is particularly poignant to think of all the women who would have died here in some of the hardest circumstances imaginable. Death would have been so much closer to everyone in a time before the use of anaesthetics or antibiotics that we all rely on so much today. Our starting point for the evening’s set is the painting ‘The Sick Rose’, a dramatic and thought provoking piece.

Ellen Christiansen is an award winning figurative artist and member of the Society of Portrait Sculptors living and working in London. She has many years teaching experience including drawing, painting and sculpture. Students have ranged from total beginners to advanced practitioners. She currently teaches at The Art Academy at London Bridge and holds classes in her studio, including portrait masterclasses for the Society of Portrait Sculptors. Awards include the prestigious Founders Sculpture Prize 2015 and The Heatherleys Prize 2018.
